I dedicated my graphic novel, Salt Green Death (Conundrum Press, 2025) to my parents (Karin Thorsen September 17 1936 – November 8 2008. Roar Thorsen August 8, 1930 – October 25 2012). Not only did my parents shape me (sculpting me into the strange rag doll I am today), and not only did their personal creative passions influence me – my parents were an integral part of the book’s long research journey as we explored locations and archives, dialogued. They were constantly cheerleading about the project, not knowing where my incessant passion was taking me. Though they did not see what the final project developed into, there would be no project without them.
Today is my mother’s birthday. She would have been 89. The acknowledgement page in Salt Green Death is a study of my mamma (inspired by a photo taken by my pappa when Karin was 21). Chanterelles, Lily of the Valley and daisies were her favourites. I am that fox reflecting on the journey through a metaphoric visual essay. The page is my way of acknowledging EVERYONE who was integral in the 2003 – 2024 journey of this project.
