What does a book hold beyond its words and images?
Coffee stains. Glue. Embroidery. Cat fur. Layers of paper. Fingerprints. Marks, traces, accidents, and decisions accumulated over 21 years of research and making. The physical evidence of a process that often remains hidden once a book is finished.
On November 8, we invite you into the studio to discover the world of Salt Green Death through its original drawings and the material traces of its making. Come look closely, turn the pages, explore the layers, and see how a graphic novel takes shape through research, image, texture, and time.
Created over 21 years of research, Salt Green Death began with a cold-case investigation but grew into a story about Joseph O’Dwyer and his family: about memory, history, and the lives that surround a case. Its visual language moves beyond conventional panels, bringing together fragments, collage, symbolism, and metaphor. The original artwork holds the marks of that process—things that may be invisible in a printed book but become tangible when you encounter the work up close.
The open studio is an opportunity to spend time with these drawings and to talk about what it means to make a book, as well as what happens when we invite people into the world of its making.
From the page into the room
The open house follows Salt Green Death: The Book Experience, an immersive event presented on November 6 and 7 (both evenings sold out) that brings the book into a shared, live space through readings, music, sound, projection, and original artwork.
On Sunday, November 8, we’ll continue the conversation with a moderated discussion and audience Q&A at 1 PM. Together, we’ll reflect on how the original idea developed into a live experience, how the book’s research and visual language were translated into a five-act structure, and how place, voices, music, and sound became part of the storytelling.
We’ll explore the choices behind the work: what to include and what to leave out, where historical fact meets artistic interpretation, and what it means to leave some questions unresolved. We’ll also consider what happens when a story moves beyond the page and into a shared experience—and what stays with us afterward.
The conversation brings together me, the artist, actors and co-producers Jennifer Clement and Vincent Gale, production manager and script editor Anna Thorsen, and music, sound, and projection artist Julian Bowers.
Whether you experience the performances on Friday or Saturday, are discovering the book for the first time, or are curious about the creative process behind a graphic novel, you’re warmly invited to join us.
