Recall my March 10 art event that started it all!

And so it goes… “I Can’t Live Without… Art” portrait event at Holt Renfrew

IF YOU ARE INQUIRING ABOUT HAVING A PORTRAIT DONE, DISCUSSING AN ART EVENT, ARRANGING A CREATIVITY WORKSHOP OR PURCHASING MY SOCK MONKEYS, just drop me a line at  Email or comment here.

On Saturday March 26 I did a live art event at Holt Renfrew Vancouver displaying some of my original arts and crafts and doing live portraits of Anna T Fabulous and Jocelyn Louise as well as body painting on Jocelyn.  A unusual place to set up but why not?!
Jocelyn and Rebecca Rawlinson helped with set up!

I did a portrait of Jocelyn, and painted on her, but what was most exciting for me was the fact that Jocelyn worked on her own piece as well! (Oil pastel with linseed oil on foam board)

My daughter came to town and it was SO GOOD to have a few precious minutes with her while doing her portrait!  I will finish her portrait later today.

• A HUGE THANK YOU to HOLT RENFREW, Kimberly Newton, Scott Mckeown, and REBECCA RAWLINSON for this opportunity!

• Thank you to all those who came by to chat and visit and to CC for grabbing my phone to snap pictures!

• Thank you Julia Kozlov for coming by to photograph and for the following kind words:

“Kat Thorsen is just amazing. The amount of things she makes and makes and makes, people she gets involved, youth she inspires – visiting her site [SOCK MONKEY MONTHLYis like being in the perfect world of love, art, community and sock monkeys.”

“Every time I come to witness something your part of or see something you create, I just get overwhelmed by the level of craftsmanship and presentation of your work. It is incredibly inspiring and heart warming to witness you at work and to even see your work. Today at the Holts Live Painting for example I loved the way you created an artisticly cohesive atmosphere around your work – i loved the set up for the portrait paintings – the super creative and fun sock monkeys – images of inspiration and so much more. Just amazing! And I love how focused you are on your work when you make it – and the amount of work you are able to generate. I am just always speechless after being a guest to a Kat Thorsen event!”

I look forward to working with Julia in the future!

Let’s talk portraits this Saturday! Holt Renfrew #Vancouver 2-6 PM! See this piece live!

Anna T Fabulous and Syren (china marker, acrylic on foam board)

On Saturday March 26 I will be doing a live art event at Holt Renfrew Vancouver between 2 and 6 PM!  I will be displaying some of my original arts and crafts.  I will also be doing live portraits of Anna T Fabulous and Jocelyn Louise as well as body painting on Jocelyn!  See the piece above (of Anna and Syren) in person!

A HUGE THANK YOU to HOLT RENFREW, Kimberly Newton, Scott Mckeown, and REBECCA RAWLINSON for this opportunity!

The portraits. Foreshadowing of the next large art event: a take on the Inside Out Project. Another #massarttherapysession!

The art event as a huge success and is now a catalyst for bringing more of these happenings to Vancouver.  It left attendees hungry for more creative and interactive art experiences.

I met with the muses last Monday and our next event will likely be some time in May 2011.  The focus will be THE PORTRAIT, as inspired by THE INSIDE OUT PROJECT (see details about this project below).

THE NEXT EVENT IDEA:

The premise of the night will be to install 12 large canvases in the creative space.  Each canvas will have a portrait of a local (through pre-registration and subject will be in attendance).  The portrait will have been started by me in charcoal prior to the event- essentially an outline/layout of the essential form of that person.  The subjects and a group of participants will then finish the individual portraits during the 3 hour evening.  The process will be filmed and participants interviewed (if they choose) regarding their relationship to the pieces and their experience of the creative process.

There will also be body art, cash bar, aprés dinner snacks and film.  Afterwards, the portraits will be photographed and be made into posters for pasting around town.  This process will also be filmed and a blog page will be started to record the relationship of the pieces to the community.   The original pieces may travel and be re-exhibited once the film is completed.

Interactive art and feedback from March 10th art event! Sharing time and space. #arttherapy

This event was born out of a conversation I had with my dear friend Diane Clement, who made me realize “YES, I CAN!”

What an evening of art and people supporting at-risk youth programs!  Here are photos of art created by participants in our mega-art therapy session!  I am also including feedback and my thank you’s below.

Host Rebecca working the room at the beautiful District 319 venue

In my art school (1980’s), teachers would not share their art work until the last day of the course so as not to influence us.  I have found that allowing people to be surrounded by my art and creative process seems to make people at ease and encourage self-expression.

If anything, tonight has made me, and others, want to get our paints and canvases out and just…do this. – Jocelyn Louise (March 10th art event)

FEEDBACK:

I received some amazing feedback, and that certainly feels good!  But it’s not all about me- it’s about sharing time, space and art with you, my community!  Love you all!

Congratulations to Rebecca Bree Rawlinson and Kat Thorsen for hosting an amazing artistic experience. Best I’ve ever been to in Vancouver. I had an amazing time looking at all the work and being able to create my own. The food was fabulous, and the whole atmosphere was fun and beautiful. I can’t wait for future collaborations between you two.  My first Kat Thorsen event led me to being incredibly impressed, amazed and in awe of the whole experience. I have never been to an interactive art show – and it was fabulous. The atmosphered, layout, mediums to draw on, quality and variety of work exhibited were all though-out and done with full quality from a curating context. I am very excited for future events hosted by Rebecca Rawlinson x Kat Thorsen team. – Julia Kozlov

I am thrilled to live in a city, which offers programs such as Intersections Media. I wish more people knew that it existed so I’m doing my part to spread the news. – MC

Kat, that was incredible. So many people want to get their art supplies out. Me as well. – JL

Your show was amazing. It was nice to have you in the spotlight and not your amazing offspring. – CD

What a FUN, MAGICAL NIGHT – [Kat] was AMAZING – the ‘instant’ picture of her friend and the friends paintings she unveiled – were SENSATIONAL – so REAL – they looked ALIVE. AND – her personal books of her work, and her many eclectic art pieces were unique.  She spoke so well and sincerely – she is a very special, warm, giving, talented young woman – D. and I have so much admiration for her and for [her two siblings] – Their mother is ‘beaming’ down at her “Mighty Trio” with pride! – Diane Clement

Evolution of a portrait of @RebeccaRaw

1. Start with the muse.  Watch her in process- before the event and during.   What’s her essence? What does she portray?

2. Have a source photo as the muse will not have time to sit (as she is hosting the event!):

3. Spend about 30 minutes painting (I call it drawing as I use oil pastel sticks and my fingers on canvas drenched in linseed oil).  No pre-planning.  Just do it:

4. Take the wet piece home and sit with it for about a day.

5. Spend 15 minutes finalizing.  Only that.  Let it go.  Let it be honest, not realistic.  Don’t worry about it.

6. Do a photo shoot with the muses and their respective portraits. (STAY TUNED!)

7. Send portrait off to its new home in California!

Love you ,Rebecca!

She was amazing- my host @RebeccaRaw (5 min portrait no. 32)

I will be posting in detail all about last night’s art event all this weekend, but right now I have to thank Rebecca Rawlinson for making it an event of a lifetime!  To have such support, love and leadership from someone so incredible took the pressure off me and let me enjoy the night fully and allowed me to facilitate what was essentially an art therapy session on steroids!

Rebecca worked the room like magic.  Those who met her for the first time, fell in love.  For the rest of us, we fell in love all over again!

I have a portrait of Rebecca (in oil) to finish, started last night (just needs some finessing), and will share that when done.  But to debrief the night for myself I just had to do a 5 min sketch right now (in pencil in the back of an index card).  I call it Rebecca as California teen.

LOVE YOU, REBECCA!

“Jocelyn”  Quick sketch (china marker and coffee on index card) as inspired by Picasso’s Portrait of Françoise, 1946

Fantastic book!

From ANTIQBOOK.COM:

A comprehensive joyous monography on Picasso’s life, work, and people who wrote about him. Written shortly after his death at 91 (April 8, 1973). The celebrated Picasso creating until his death was indisputably one of the outstanding geniuses in the entire history of Western art. With so much written about Picasso, this book was conceived and produced for those that wish to comprehend the ‘phenomenon’ of Picasso in its complex entirety. A proud, unforgettable celebration of life was Picasso’s gift to the world, in his art. Numerous photographs of Picasso, friends and family. Two major sections are, a biography of the artists by Porzio and a critique of his career by Valsecchi. A revealing section called “Picasso on Picasso,” is 12 pages of comments about his work by the artist himself. The authors present 144 color plates in chronological order from his best works, many full page, along with many black and white drawings, and fold-out of Guernica. Here are turn of the century paintings reflecting his indebtedness to the masters of Impressionism, haunting canvases from his ”Blue Period,” the classic elegance of the “Rose Period,” realistic portraits of a master draftsman, the invention of Cubism, experiments with Surrealism, his collages, sculpture, and the subjects that fascinated him: bullfights, clowns, the horror of war and women in all their mystery and sensuality. Additionally 24 pages of excerpts about Picasso from the writings of Gertrude Stein, Guillaume Apollinaire, Jean Cocteau, Roland Penrose, Albert Moavia, and others. Sculptor Henry Moore best summarized the man’s achievement when he said, “Picasso has taught the us above all to see the world in a new way.” Brown cloth boards and spine, gilt figure to front board, gilt lettering to spine.

No idea if these pieces still exist!  Even though I have a ton of stuff filling an expensive storage room, my moods and moves tend to purge artwork ruthlessly.  It’s freeing to get rid of them, but then when I find them on an old CD, I get a twinge of regret.

I’m preparing for a live event which means I’m gutting the storage room of paintings, drawings, quilts, journals etc.  I’m going to allow people to look through the old journals, to do art at interactive art tables, purchase my art for cheap and join in a silent auction for larger pieces.  The evening will also include live portrait painting!

I’m just in the process getting an appropriate venue in place and will announce the date soon!   The evening will be hosted by Rebecca Rawlinson (the subject of the live portrait) and will include new portraits of my muses- Jay and Jocelyn!

Here are today’s lost pieces:

The First Seance (aka Thinking)

Fashion = shoulders back! Lessons from @annatfabulous and @RebeccaRaw

I RECOMMEND:

REBECCA RAWLINSON

I NEED A SOCIAL LIFE (ANNA T FABULOUS)

These 2 incredible young women share with the world their passion for the art of fashion.

But what they TEACH ME is that fashion is truly about:

• SELF-CONFIDENCE!

• SELF-WORTH!

• SELF-DECLARATION!

• SHOULDERS BACK!
